One of the great blessings of living in the Washington DC area is the National Gallery of Art and the priceless treasures it often brings to the public, free of charge! And their latest gift to us is a spectacular exhibit of paintings by the famous 17th  century Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. Entitled “Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting.”, this new exhibit brings together almost 70 paintings made between 1655 to 1680 of the Dutch Golden Age. The exhibit opened on October 22, 2017, and it only runs until January 21, 2018. Best of all, photography is allowed!

Scheduled for a weekday to avoid large weekend crowds.

Our class begins with Corey discussing the strategies for night photography and how to best capture the displays and colorful lights. You will learn what camera settings to use to capture high quality images, with special attention on White Balance, ISO and Autofocus. Focusing in the dark can a challenge and Corey will share tips and techniques that will improve your focusing accuracy.

Each winter, thousands of ducks call the Chesapeake Bay area their home. Surprisingly, one of their favorite places to spend the winter is on the Washington Mall in Constitution Gardens. Accustomed to many visitors at the pond, they are easily accessible for photography.

Join us in the city and enjoy these wild ducks with the Washington Monument overlooking. You’ll enjoy several different species of ducks and quickly improve your bird photography skills.

The beautiful National Cathedral is a great place to hone your skills in architectural and church photography. And one of the best times to do it is in the early morning light especially in the winter months.  When the sun is low in the southern sky, its beams pour through the south-facing stained glass windows of the Nave, projecting a riot of colors from these windows onto the grey stone columns, walls, and floors of the cathedral.

So this safari is all about training you to see and capture good composition in your photographs. This will help you become a more astute critic of your own photos by studying and documenting works of the masters.

We also teach you how to shoot artwork in low-light situations without flash or tripod, getting the right exposure and white balance.

The huge picture windows, the Jeffersonian-style arching domes, and the built-in artwork of architect Cesar Pelli’s $300 million Terminal B/C at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport provide many opportunities for good exterior and interior architectural photography. And the BEST time of day to capture all of this is at twilight, that period of deep blue-sky lighting which takes place shortly after sunset.
