Seeing in Black & White

Seeing in Black & White

Join Greg Holden and learn how to see color in black in white and how monochrome images can be used to portray certain moods and feelings.

The class begins with an image rich presentation and discussion on B&W photography focusing on what types of images look better in B&W and how to seek out great subjects for later B&W conversion.

Following the classroom portion, we'll walk over to nearby Lafayette Square (behind the White House) to "see" in black and white and capture photos that we'll process later in the day.

Back in the classroom Greg will demonstrate how to edit and convert a photo to B&W using the powerful tools of Adobe Lightroom and Nik's Silver Effects Pro. This software is not required for the class but if you own it, Greg can show you how to get the most from it (although you should have a basic working knowledge of at least Lightroom prior to the class).

The last portion of the class will be spent working with participants as they convert their own photos into B&W.

Class Needs:

  • Camera to capture images to use for the processing portion of the class. (Camera manual, extra battery and memory card are always good to have on hand.)
  • Participants will need to bring a laptop with Lightroom installed for the BW conversion and editing portion of the class. NOTE: Students should be somewhat familiar with Lightroom software program such as importing images and using the Develop Module tools. We will not be able to introduce you to this material at the class. Consider the Lightroom In A Day, the Lightroom Library In Depth or the Lightroom Develop Module In Depth classes as a way to learn the program.
  • Memory card reader if laptop does not have a slot.

For the shooting portion of the class we will be outside for approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

“Thought the class was very well presented. The lecture portion was good but the hands-on shooting session and working with images in post processing were the best parts.”

"I had an OUTSTANDING experience at the Intro to DSLR class taught by Greg. Within 20 minutes into the class, we were already testing out new knowledge and I was immediately amazed!”
