2017, July 23: Getting Started In Food Photography

This class has been revised and now includes a hands-on shooting session. Participants break into small groups and practice photographing various food set-ups and lighting conditions. 

Join us at Renee Comet’s professional studio as she offers her tips and techniques for getting started in food photography.

Renee will share her creative process in an image rich presentation and will discuss the technical details, equipment basics and creative aspects to consider to help you develop your own vision. Learn from the pro as she discusses and demonstrates building a shot from the very beginning using available light (like we might have in our own kitchens), as well as using a basic studio light set up.

Bonnie Benwick of the Washington Post Food section will be joining Renee at the class as a special guest. Bonnie has been working at The Washington Post since 1989 and in the Food section since 2004. She writes the weekly 'Dinner in Minutes' column, cookbook reviews, manages recipes and photo shoots and has edited "The Washington Post Cookbook: Readers' Favorite Recipes" (Time Capsule Press, 2013). Bonnie  has a wealth of knowledge and is looking forward to sharing her insights and tips for food styling at the class.

Participants should bring their camera and tripod for the hands-on shooting session. This portion of the class will help develop stronger skills for focus, camera angle, depth of field, lighting and more.

Participants should be familiar with their camera settings and with manual exposure controls such as ISO, Aperture and Shutter. We will not be able to introduce you to this material at this class.
