Getting Started in Bird Photography at the Maryland Zoo Baltimore

Join us at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and learn how to photograph birds in the wild. Learn the concepts of digital photography, field skills and equipment needed capture our feathered friends.  Designed for the beginning/novice photographer, this course will get you well on your way in photographing nature and wildlife at its best.

Learn some of the tips and secrets bird photographers use to get those beautiful captures that you see and gain confidence in your photography while capturing some of the exciting birds at the zoo.

Learn how to anticipate the bird’s behaviors and choose the right camera settings for a variety of lighting and shooting situations.  Expand your technical and field knowledge to get closer to the bird and improve your images. This course combines lecture with in-field practice and image feedback.

Topics include:

  • Equipment and associated accessories needed for bird photography.
  • Light, exposure, histogram and composition techniques.
  • The role of software and the digital darkroom as a management and processing tool.
  • Where to go and how to approach birds.
  • Ethical issues associated with nature photography.

Recommended Equipment:

  • DSLR with telephoto lens
  • Tripod
  • Extra memory card and battery
  • Camera manual

Class Limit: 10

Emily Carter Mitchell

Emily Carter Mitchell is an outdoor photography enthusiast well known for her bird, nature and wildlife photography. With over 20 years in the travel and hospitality industry, the sense of adventure and discovering lesser known destinations continue to inspire Emily’s photographic endeavors.

As a gifted photographer and avid birder in the DELMARVA area, time and patience has given her the insight in understanding the behaviors and characteristics of the avian world. Capturing a moment that expresses personality and a sense of humanity within the natural world brings one closer to nature.
