Join us at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and learn how to photograph birds in the wild. Learn the concepts of digital photography, field skills and equipment needed capture our feathered friends. Designed for the beginning/novice photographer, this course will get you well on your way in photographing nature and wildlife at its best.
Learn some of the tips and secrets bird photographers use to get those beautiful captures that you see and gain confidence in your photography while capturing some of the exciting birds at the zoo.
Learn how to anticipate the bird’s behaviors and choose the right camera settings for a variety of lighting and shooting situations. Expand your technical and field knowledge to get closer to the bird and improve your images. This course combines lectures with in-field practice and image feedback.
- Equipment and associated accessories needed for bird photography.
- Light, exposure, histogram, and composition techniques.
- The role of software and the digital darkroom as a management and processing tool.
- Where to go and how to approach birds.
- Ethical issues associated with nature photography.

Emily Carter Mitchell is an award winning and published nature and wildlife photographer based in Annapolis, Maryland. Through her work Nature as Art she brings a creative interpretation of the natural world around us bringing a sense of serenity in a world increasingly filled with chaos. There is a sense of stillness and ethereal attributes in her images that has one see beyond what is first obvious.
Emily holds a Master’s Degree in Global Management, with a corporate background in Human Resources and extensive years in the travel and hospitality industry. Her photographic journey began when she was a teenager and she has always enjoyed photography as a way to capture the world around her.
Emily’s passion of photography is shared with others through her nature and wildlife photography classes for Capital Photography Center based in the Metro DC area.
