Waterfalls in the Patapsco

Waterfalls in the Patapsco

Patapsco Park offers over 16,000 acres over 32 miles along the Patapsco River and includes eight different recreational areas for a variety of outdoor activities. This adventure will bring us to a small section of this beautiful park, and we’ll explore the hiking trails for some of the best highlights in the area.

This class will focus on learning how using filters can lead to slow exposures that create silky water effects at Cascade Falls and surrounding creeks. Along with developing your slow exposure skills, in-depth compositional techniques for nature photography will be emphasized.

Designed for any level of adventurous photographer, we will concentrate on making thoughtful choices for compelling compositions and creating slow exposure captures.

Topics Include:

  • How Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer filters are used to create a silky water effect.
  • Technical aspects including camera settings, the histogram, understanding light and composition.
  • Creative composition for compelling nature compositions.

FYI - This adventure is on uneven and rocky terrain, and it is about a quarter mile walk to the waterfalls. Boulder stepping is necessary near the water’s edge. Tall rubber boots can help when stepping into streams.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Digital camera with a zoom lens in the 16 – 105mm range.
  • Tripod (required for slow exposures) and remote switch if available.
  • Filters including: Circular Polarizer, Graduated Neutral Density and Neutral Density Filter (6 Stop or variable ND)
  • Clean memory card and fully charged battery
  • Camera manual

Not included in the price of the class is the Park entrance fee - $3 for in-state and $5 for out of state.

COVID Safety Practices: Please bring a mask and wear it anytime we are gathered close together or when the instructor is working with you. When we are spread out you can remove your mask if you’d like.
