Winter Wonderland Adventure

The month of February surely will bring wintery scenes and is ideal for the hearty photographer in this photographic outing. Using weather to our advantage, one can create unique images that tell a story.

In this course, you’ll learn how to brave the winter days and safely explore natural areas. We’ll work on our nature compositions from wide landscapes to intimate scenes. Enhance your creative perspective in nature and create something unique.

Join Emily Carter Mitchell at Patapsco Valley State Park and develop your artistic eye for winter focused nature photography. You’ll learn how your composition choice conveys your interpretation of the natural world. We’ll look at nature’s smaller scenes as well as snow and ice for textures and patterns.

Topics Include:

  • How the Expose properly in snowy conditions.
  • Learn how light effects your compositional and exposure decisions.
  • See how to structure compositional elements in nature composition.
  • How to use the Histogram for your exposure decisions.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Digital camera with a zoom lens with focal range of 24-105mm and/or 70-200mm.
  • Circular Polarizer filter
  • Clean memory card and a fully charged battery.
  • Tripod for deep focus and sharp images.
  • It is always suggested to bring your camera manual for reference.

 COVID Safety Practices: Please bring a mask and wear it anytime we are gathered close together or when the instructor is working with you. When we are spread out you can remove your mask if you’d like.

Emily Carter Mitchell

Emily Carter Mitchell is an award winning and published nature and wildlife photographer based in Annapolis, Maryland. Through her work Nature as Art she brings a creative interpretation of the natural world around us bringing a sense of serenity in a world increasingly filled with chaos. There is a sense of stillness and ethereal attributes in her images that has one see beyond what is first obvious.

Emily holds a Master’s Degree in Global Management, with a corporate background in Human Resources and extensive years in the travel and hospitality industry. Her photographic journey began when she was a teenager and she has always enjoyed photography as a way to capture the world around her.

Emily’s passion of photography is shared with others through her nature and wildlife photography classes for Capital Photography Center based in the Metro DC area.

Class Cancellation Policy

  • A refund or a credit towards another class (less a $20 processing fee) can be given if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class.
  • If there is no cancellation notice, or it is given 5 business days or less, no refund or credit will be given.
  • Please check the name and date of the class carefully. Requests to reschedule a class will incur a $20 processing fee provided notice is given more than 5 business days prior to the class. If request to reschedule is given less than business 5 days prior to the class, no refund or credit will be given.
  • If Capital Photography Center cancels or postpones a class due to weather or low enrollment, you can choose a full refund or a credit towards a future class.
