Wintering Waterfowl

Each winter thousands of ducks call the Chesapeake Bay area their home. Join us at Constitution Gardens in our Nation’s Capital and enjoy wintering waterfowl with the Washington Monument in the backdrop. You’ll enjoy several different species of ducks and learn how to photograph birds in the wild. Learn the concepts of bird photography and field skills needed to capture our feathered friends.

Designed for the beginning/novice photographer, this course will get you well on your way in photographing nature and wildlife at its best. We will discuss the techniques and equipment used for nature photography.

Learn how to anticipate the bird’s behavior, and choose the right camera settings for a variety of lighting and shooting situations.  Expand your technical and field knowledge on how to get closer to the bird and improve your images. This course combines lecture with in-field practice and image feedback.

Topics include:

The essentials of bird photography including:

  • Equipment and associated accessories needed for bird photography.
  • Technical aspects including camera settings, the histogram, understanding light and composition.
  • Field techniques and Ethics for wildlife photography.
  • Resources available for the bird photographer.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Digital camera with longest focal length telephoto lens.
  • Tripod

Emily Carter Mitchell

Emily Carter Mitchell is an award winning and published nature and wildlife photographer based in Annapolis, Maryland. Through her work Nature as Art she brings a creative interpretation of the natural world around us bringing a sense of serenity in a world increasingly filled with chaos. There is a sense of stillness and ethereal attributes in her images that has one see beyond what is first obvious.

Emily holds a Master’s Degree in Global Management, with a corporate background in Human Resources and extensive years in the travel and hospitality industry. Her photographic journey began when she was a teenager and she has always enjoyed photography as a way to capture the world around her.

Emily’s passion of photography is shared with others through her nature and wildlife photography classes for Capital Photography Center based in the Metro DC area.

  • Requests to reschedule a class will incur a $20 processing fee provided notice is given more than 5 business days prior to the class. If request to reschedule is given less than business 5 days prior to the class, no refund or credit will be given.
  • If Capital Photography Center cancels or postpones a class due to weather or low enrollment, you can choose a full refund or a credit towards a future class.
