There is no better place to photograph fantastic murals, street art, and neighborhood architecture than DC’s historic U Street and Shaw districts. Join Instructor Geoff Livingston and explore some of the most interesting and visually rich residential locations in the city.
We will start in Blagden Alley and then hop on the metro to the Shaw Station, one of the most colorful neighborhoods in the city with incredible murals and great street scenes. We then work our way west to 14th street, with a few stops in between to see some of the fantastic buildings in the neighborhood.
Along the way, we'll walk where Duke Ellington strode through the city and the MLK riots occurred all the while creating some fabulous photographs – just make sure to wear good walking shoes!

• Street photography composition tips
• What makes an exciting cityscape
• Neighborhood architectural tips
If you haven’t tried street photography or photographed murals before, we'll help you get more comfortable with this style of photography. DC is a great place to learn about this because it has wide sweeping avenues with a lot of light and is an active city with many characters walking about from hipsters to street people to tourists.
Although any camera will do, for best results we recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure controls.
