Join instructor Lori Lankford for Garden Photography in the Smithsonian Gardens. In this course we will explore how to create images that weave together to create a story of the garden.
The course will focus on capturing images using various technical skills, exploring depth of field, light, and selective focus. We will capture the small, fine details in the garden as well as the larger scale garden views. The final images will weave together to tell the story of the entire garden.
Lori will cover:
- How to capture images in a variety of garden settings
- How to use light and modify light in the garden
- How to use selective focus and Depth of Field in your images
- How to capture the close-up small images in the garden as well as the larger scale garden scenes.
This is a hands-on outdoor class where we will explore in the gardens, using the garden as our canvas to create our story of the garden.
Participants should have a strong working knowledge of thier cameras and manual settings.
A DSLR or mirrorless camera is required for this course. Lenses in the range of 35mm-150mm will work well. A tripod is recommended for this class.

Lori Lankford is a photographer specializing in macro, flower and landscape photography. Her passion for photography began as a way to capture her personal travel adventures. Over the years she dived into the fine details of macro and flower photography. She loves to escape so deeply into the details of a tiny object. Lori spends her free time in local gardens across the country shooting in the natural light and capturing its beauty. Lori’s work has been exhibited in local and national gallery exhibits as well as in printed calendars and catalogs.
