The FUNdamentals of Food Photography

Have fun with your food!

Join Laura Chase de Formigny and be prepared to learn from a pro as she shares her tips and tricks for getting started in food photography.

LC will share her creative process in an inspiring and image rich presentation and discuss the technical details, equipment basics and creative aspects to consider to help build your food photography portfolio and develop your own style and vision.  She'll also discuss and demonstrate how to build a shot from the very beginning using available light (like what we might have at home in our own kitchens), as well as using a using a basic studio light set up.

Following the presentation, students will break into small groups and practice photographing food in different lighting conditions with her creative expertise and guidance to help along the way.

Topics covered:

  • Camera settings & lenses that are best for food photography
  • Exposure settings
  • Depth of field and focus choice
  • Lighting including available light vs studio light
  • Composition and camera angles
  • Building the shot
  • Effective use of props
  • Basic food styling tips
  • Recommended gear
  • Industry resources
  • And more

We're thankful for the support and collabotation of Mah-Ze-Dahr bakery for providing the food we'll use to photograph.

Bonus image review section at the end of class! Each student is invited to share up to 4 images to be gently critiqued by LC.

Students should bring their cameras and a macro lens (if available), otherwise a normal lens in the range of 24-70mm. With a background in photojournalism and time spent working as a staff photographer at the Annapolis Capital Gazette, it’s no surprise that she’s sought after for her strong editorial eye by regional restaurants, chefs, and clients like The Washington Post, AARP, NPR, Smithsonian Institute, Science Magazine, and the Michelin Guide.
