Unlock the full potential of your external flash unit, join us for this hands-on class and learn flash photography skills to take your photos to a new level.
Whether you're a beginner or an enthusiast you'll learn to:
- Harness the power of your flash by understanding its various modes and functions
- Balance flash with camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) to maintain a good exposure
- Confidently use both auto and manual flash modes
- Adjust flash strength to achieve the perfect lighting for your shots
- Apply a variety of creative lighting techniques:
- Straight-on flash for direct lighting
- Fill flash to soften shadows in bright conditions
- Bouncing light for softer, more natural-looking lighting
- Use accessories to modify and enhance your flash
Led by instructor Corey Hilz, this class will change how you approach using flash in your photography. You'll learn valuable tools for lighting your subjects creatively and artistically, enabling you to capture stunning shots in any lighting condition.
What to bring: Your camera with a compatible external flash unit. A versatile lens covering a wide to telephoto range (18-105mm recommended). No tripod needed.

Instructor: Corey Hilz

Corey Hilz is a professional photographer specializing in nature and travel photography. He finds the diversity in nature and cultures around the world offer boundless opportunities for new images. Corey approaches his subjects with an artistic eye, looking for a fresh perspective. He goes beyond the documentary image to show a unique perspective using color, shape and line. He strives to share the beauty of a destination you’ve never seen and provide a new perspective on a familiar subject. While Corey has collected diverse images from extensive travel, he also finds some of the most interesting subjects close to home.
Class Cancellation Policy
- A refund or a credit towards another class (less a $20 processing fee) can be given if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class.
- If there is no cancellation notice, or it is given 5 business days or less, no refund or credit will be given.
- Please check the name and date of the class carefully. Requests to reschedule a class will incur a $20 processing fee provided notice is given more than 5 business days prior to the class. If request to reschedule is given less than business 5 days prior to the class, no refund or credit will be given.
- If Capital Photography Center cancels or postpones a class due to weather or low enrollment, you can choose a full refund or a credit towards a future class.
