Rock Creek Park Adventure

Rock Creek Park Adventure

Join Emily Carter Mitchell for an “Adventure” hike in beautifully wild yet local Rock Creek Park. Expand your creative nature photography by getting off the beaten track and find the hidden treasures on the trail.

Along the rapids area of Rock Creek Park the road is closed on the weekends to auto traffic bringing peace and quiet along the water. With a meandering trail along the river this adventure allows us to slow down and create compelling compositions of bridges, granite boulders and flowing waters.

This class will focus on Landscape Photography, and how to use filters for slow exposures that create silky water effects along the rapids section with historic bridges as backdrop. Along with developing your slow exposure skills, in-depth compositional techniques for landscape and nature photography will be emphasized.

Designed for any level of adventurous photographer, we will concentrate on making thoughtful choices for compelling compositions and creating slow exposure captures.

Topics Include:

  • Landscape Photography and Nature Compositions
  • When to use Neutral Density and/or Circular Polarizer filters in nature photography.
  • Elements of Composition and how to construct a meaningful image.
  • Technical aspects including camera settings, the exposure triangle, the histogram, and working with available light for the best composition.
  • Photography preparation for trail and travel.

This adventure is on uneven and rocky terrain. Boulder stepping is necessary near the water’s edge. Estimated distance is 2 miles on both paved, unpaved and rocky trails.

A DLSR or mirrorless camera with a zoom lens in the 16-105mm range.
A tripod is highly recommended for this class to give you the most creative options for capturing the water with long exposures.

Class limit: 8

NOTE - Students will be required to follow COVID-19 Safety Practices, conduct a Self-Screening Health Assessment, and sign a Waiver of Liability prior to attending a class. These items can be reviewed on the class registration page.
