Getting Started In Studio Lighting

Getting Started In Studio Lighting

Join Laura Hatcher in her Old Town, Alexandria photography studio and learn what gear is best for creating your own studio. This hands-on class provides photographers an opportunity to learn how to set up various types of lighting equipment to create portraits in a studio setting.

Students will learn how to set up and configure the lighting and modifiers, and briefly practice photographing each other to see in real time how all the equipment works together to produce a portrait.

Topics include:

  • Equipment overview of camera, lenses, lights, and controlling light with slaves, triggers or sync cords.
  • Also, backdrops, modifiers such as softboxes, stripboxes and VFlats, etc.

Come away from this class with a solid foundation for creating your own studio lighting set up.

Students should bring their DSLR or Mirrorless camera, lenses such as 50mm on a crop sensor camera, 85mm on a full frame camera or any lens in the range of 24-70mm. Tripods are not required.

COVID Safety Practices: Masks are optional.

"Laura made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She was open to answer any questions on equipment, business, camera settings, how-to's ... and more. Laura provided wonderful insight into how things/equipment works, as well as challenges she has encountered. I recommend Laura's class to anyone interested in setting up a studio or learning about in field lighting."
