Garden Photography at the Hillwood Gardens

A garden oasis in the heart of Washington DC, is the Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens. This horticultural wonder offers a variety of specialized gardens flowing over 13 acres. The floral displays and sculpted gardens present a myriad of compositional opportunities.
Join Kim Kelly as she guides you around the estate leading your eyes towards compelling compositions, as well as providing you with numerous tips for outdoor floral photography and demonstrating some “tools” to enhance your images.
Topics Include:
- Creating botanical art using floral as well as man-made elements
- Close-up photography (without tripods)
- Choosing the right aperture for the desired effect
- Tips and tools for garden photography
- Discovering and playing with patterns & textures
Recommended Equipment: DSLR or Mirrorless camera, lenses in the range of 18 – 200mm(24-105mm & 70-200mm). A circular polarizing filter if you have one for reducing glare and enhancing the sky. Tripods are not allowed in the gardens. Extra Batteries (charged) & spare SD Cards & Camera Manual
Note: August is typically a hot month so hydrate in advance and bring a water bottle. Consider an umbrella for shade.

Kim’s interest in photography took root when she received her first camera, a Canon AT-1 (film) as a college graduation gift and she has continued to shoot ever since. She eventually migrated over to digital technology and her passion for capturing images continued to grow. Kim served as the Field Trip Director for three years for the Digital Photography Club of Annapolis and serves as the club’s liaison to the Maryland Photography Alliance.
Class Cancellation Policy
- A refund or a credit towards another class (less a $20 processing fee) can be given if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class.
- If there is no cancellation notice, or it is given 5 business days or less, no refund or credit will be given.
- Please check the name and date of the class carefully. Requests to reschedule a class will incur a $20 processing fee provided notice is given more than 5 business days prior to the class. If request to reschedule is given less than business 5 days prior to the class, no refund or credit will be given.
- If Capital Photography Center cancels or postpones a class due to weather or low enrollment, you can choose a full refund or a credit towards a future class.
