Early Morning & Sunrise on the National Mall

Early Morning & Sunrise on the National Mall

New Class

Join us to capture amazing images and gain a better understanding of the impact of morning light in your landscape photos.

In the early morning, the National Mall belongs to quiet observers. With the rising sun, golden light transforms the monuments providing some of the best photographic opportunities on the Mall.

We’ll begin our morning at the Lincoln Memorial during "blue hour," watching as the rising sun begins to illuminate the reflecting pool and the distant Capitol dome.

As the sun clears the horizon, we will capture the warm golden light pouring directly into the Lincoln Memorial chamber. We’ll then visit the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials, where we’ll find dramatic shadows which emphasizes the emotional weight of the sculptures.

Topics include:

  • Balancing exposure to capture the bright monument stones against the rich colors of a dawn sky.
  • Compositional principles using the Mall's iconic symmetry, leading lines and framing opportunities to create
"postcard" shots with a personal perspective.
  • Making the most of the early morning light and vibrant color contrasts that only occur during the first 60 minutes of the day.

Prerequisites: Participants should be knowledgeable regarding their exposure controls of ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed and should be able to work in Aperture or Manual mode.

Recommended Gear: Any DSLR or Mirrorless camera with exposure controls, lenses in the range from 18-200mm, a circular polarizer filter, and a sturdy tripod.
