Light Painting as an Art Form

Light Painting as an Art Form

NEW CLASS OFFERING

Use light as your paintbrush and capture creative art in the dark. Join instructor Lori Saunders and discover light painting techniques that turn a single, long exposure with moving lights into an other-worldly image caught entirely in-camera.

Topics include:

  • What is Light Painting
  • What you need to get started
  • Recommended camera settings for best exposure
  • Techniques for focusing in the dark
  • Step-by-step demonstrations and practice with volunteer models, backdrop, and table-top setups

After an image rich presentation, Lori will give a step-by-step demonstration with volunteer models, and table-top setups. The students will then practice painting with light using hand-held tools and experiment with different setups and techniques to see what works best.

By the end of the class, students will have the skills to create their own surreal art with light alone or be able to incorporate light painting into their portrait or still life work.

Recommended Gear: A digital camera with manual exposure controls or a cell phone (with experience using a long exposure app). Lenses in the range of 12-70mm. A zoom lens is preferable and easier to work with but prime lenses will be fine if that’s what you have. A sturdy tripod is a must.

Prerequisites: Participants should be comfortable with their camera and know how to change exposure settings and be somewhat familiar with their camera’s focusing systems. We’ll be shooting in manual mode and settings and guidance will be provided throughout.

NOTE - There will be bright, flashing lights. Make sure you are comfortable with this before signing up.
