Winter Landscapes - From Macro to Micro

Join us in the field for a local landscape photography class that will challenge you to see things in a different way. Sully Park in Chantilly, Virginia is designed to return the landscape to native Virginia flora and fauna. This large meadow has abundant opportunities for beautiful landscape photos and particularly during the evening and sunset hours which are especially fruitful.
Join Ethan learn to see different types of photo opportunities and to adapt your shoot depending on conditions as they are and as they evolve on shoot day. This is a landscape photography class but there may be opportunities for winter wildlife.
This class will cover the following topics:
- Moving macro to micro - slowly learning to look for and shoot smaller and smaller scenes by noticing and photographing often overlooked elements
- Identifying varying patterns, shadows, lines, and light in nature and their effect on photos
- Learning to tell stories in documentary style over the course of a single shoot
Recommended Gear:
- DSLR or Mirrorless camera with a range of lenses from 24mm to 400mm. Focal lengths beyond this can be used for different shots but not required.
- Boots that come above the ankle or mid-calf in case of inclement weather as the meadow retains moisture very well in places
- Warm clothes in layers, gloves, and hat as this is an entirely outdoor session and weather at this time of year fluctuates greatly.
- Rain gear in case of showers or snow. We will shoot in light rain and snow. Heavy rain and snow will likely result in rescheduling the class.
Skill level: Participants should be familiar with their cameras and somewhat familiar with exposure settings of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. We will not be able to introduce you this material at the class and you don’t want to miss any of the amazing shots before you. If not familiar, consider taking the Photo Basics-Getting off Auto class first.

That three week Outward Bound trip helped Ethan realize that we often see the world only superficially - a large barren meadow in fall, a partly cloudy morning, the ordinary site of a pair of Canada geese in a pond.
